We’re really thankful to the Humane Society of Dickson County for stepping in last night to help care for the pets of families displaced by the storms. They provided food, litter, treats, toys, and even loaned carriers so families could safely get their pets settled. These pantries happen every second Saturday and provide fresh produce, proteins, and pantry staples to families facing food insecurity. The Dickson County Help Center exists to offer hope and dignity to the folks in Dickson County with love and dignity in their moment of crisis. Every day, we meet families facing hardships they never expected, and right now, the need is growing faster than ever. Since January alone, we’ve provided $53,000 in emergency assistance to 584 households with 1,577 people, including 418 children. Families come to us in all kinds of situations. Some need help just once, while others face longer recoveries. But in the past two months, we’ve also assisted 108 families seeking help for the first time. We see new clients every day, but lately, we have provided more aid to people who never imagined they’d need to ask for help. These are our neighbors. Hardworking people who’ve always found a way, until now. Rent is higher, groceries cost more, and one unexpected bill can change everything for them. Because of our community, we’ve been able to say, “Yes, we can help.” That yes kept lights on, kept families in their homes, and put food on their tables. Our regular donors have made that possible, and we are deeply grateful for them. But, we need to make sure that the need does not outpace our resources. A local mom shares this reminder: Moms do not to forget about WIC. There is an app you can download on your phone which makes shopping for the first time really easy. The card looks like any other debit or credit card. This was 1 month of benefits with WIC. I know a lot of us are struggling right now. It’s okay to use resources like WIC. What I purchased: 6 half gallons of milk, $36 in fresh fruits and veggies, cereal, whole grain items like bread and pasta, cheese, yogurt, eggs, and juice. Around $100 in groceries. The Give 'N Gobble 5K began in 2014, created by the Prize Runner's Running Club as a way to bring the community together through fitness and charity. Managed by the Help Center since 2022, the race’s proceeds ensure the continuation of essential programs, including our food bank and financial assistance services. While holiday-specific programs like the Thanksgiving Turkey Giveaway and the Christmas Store Toy Giveaway receive dedicated donations, the funds from this event help bridge gaps, ensuring our mission carries on through the winter months. It is with great honor and excitement to celebrate reaching our first goal of our Endowment. Dickson County Government presented us with an opportunity to invest in the sustainability and future of the Help Center with a dollar for dollar match up to $100,000! Through the generosity of our community we raised $115,000!Tonight the DC Commissioners presented us with $115,000 as their match plus a little more! How awesome is that!!!! Thank you Dickson County!! This is a great start to meeting our goal of raising $1 million dollars within the next 5 years. More information to follow 🙂 Many people, including myself, asked “why not just give $100,000” to help meet the needs right now. Seems like a fair question, right? So as I began to learn more about endowments and the longevity of organizations that have them, I understood and wanted to explain to the best of my ability…because I know some are asking that question. See the county could have given us the money, and we would have used it within 6 months helping those in need and then it would be gone. But by starting an endowment, this money will gain interest over the years that we will receive annually to assist those in need. This ensures that we have additional funds to help for many years to come. We are investing in our future and the future needs of our community and this is a great way to celebrate serving our community for 45 years! Another great point is that many donors look for organizations with endowments established because it shows longevity and sustainability. These donors often give to both the endowment and to programs, and often live outside our community, but desire to help organizations help those in need, so this becomes a win win for everyone!
